Great Rhino Megaways Slot Review

Great Rhino Megaways was Pragmatic Play's first crack at the Megaways setup, and you can tell they didn't want to get too weird with it. It's basically the old Great Rhino dropped into a busier format with up to 200,704 ways, high variance and a 20,000x top end. Safari backdrop, tumbling wins, wilds on the top reel, pick-your-bonus free spins. Nothing fresh really, but it's still a pretty decent spin when you're in that mood.

Game Overview

Released on 21 April 2020, Great Rhino Megaways was Pragmatic Play's first slot using the licensed Big Time Gaming Megaways engine. They didn't build a brand new game around it either, which still feels a bit safe, they just reworked Great Rhino. The layout is the usual six-reel Megaways arrangement, with 2 to 7 symbols on the main reels and that extra horizontal reel sitting across reels 2 to 5. When it fills out properly, you get the full 200,704 ways to win.

Great Rhino Megaways

Stake range is decent for UK players, starting at £0.20 and going up to £100 per spin. Switch on Ante Bet and the total cost jumps by 25%, so keep an eye on that because it creeps up fast. RTP normally sits between 96.47% and 96.58%, depending on version, which is fair enough but not exactly sacred if a casino chooses a lower setting. Variance is high, very much so. You can drift through plenty of small or dead spins, then suddenly the slot wakes up a bit. Most of the real value is shoved into the bonus, which is common, maybe too common.

How It Looks And Sounds

The look is pure safari slot stuff. Golden sky, dusty plains, animal symbols, all very familiar and maybe a bit too safe. Pragmatic cleaned up the older Great Rhino visuals rather than changing much, so it feels updated more than new. I quite like the softer ambient sounds in the background, but the drum hits on spins get loud fast. Animations are smooth enough though, no real complaints there.

Try Great Rhino Megaways Demo

Great Rhino Megaways demo version is easy enough to find on slot review sites and in plenty of casino lobbies, usually with no sign-up and no deposit needed. That's the best way to see whether the game's dry spells annoy you, because they probably will at some point. Some demos load you up with 100,000 credits or thereabouts, so you've got room to test the free spins picks properly. A few sites mention Bonus Buy, but I wouldn't rely on that. Availability seems patchy and very region-dependent.

Symbols and Paytable

The paytable is pretty straightforward. Cheetah is the big one, paying 50x for six of a kind, and then there's a massive drop to the gorilla, crocodile, hyena and flamingo symbols. So yeah, it's a bit top-heavy. The lower symbols are A, K, Q, J and 10 done in that carved wooden safari style, which looks alright. The wild is the rhino and it only lands on the top horizontal reel, covering reels 2 to 5 and subbing for regular paying symbols.

Great Rhino Megaways Features

Feature-wise, Great Rhino Megaways isn't a crowded slot at all. You've got tumbles, the main free spins bonus, and the Ante Bet toggle. That's basically the lot. It sounds a bit bare because it is, but the free spins can still do the heavy lifting thanks to the rising multiplier and retriggers. Base game wins keep things moving, sort of, though most of the proper danger and reward sits in the bonus.

Tumbling Reels

Great Rhino Megaways Tumbling Reels

Whenever you land a win, the paying symbols vanish and fresh ones drop in. Standard Megaways behaviour, but it still gives the game a bit of motion when the reels would otherwise feel flat. Chains can keep rolling until no new win appears, and the same setup runs in both the base game and free spins. I don't mind it. It makes the slot feel more active than it really is, though a lot of those tumble sequences still end in tiny returns that barely move the balance.

Free Spins

Great Rhino Megaways Free Spins

Free spins are triggered by landing 4 or more of the golden rhino coin scatters in the base game. Once you're in, you pick between 15 spins at 1x, 10 at 5x, 5 at 10x, or the mystery choice if you fancy letting the slot decide. More scatters on the trigger can mean extra starting spins, which helps a bit. This is very clearly the feature the whole game is built around. The advertised 20,000x max win basically lives here, not out in the regular grind.

Increasing Multiplier

Great Rhino Megaways Increasing Multiplier

This is the bit that matters most. During free spins, every tumble adds +1 to the multiplier, and there doesn't seem to be a stated ceiling on it. Better still, it doesn't reset after each winning spin, which would have made the whole feature a lot less intresting. It keeps building as long as the session stays alive. That's where the bigger payouts come from, not from the symbols suddenly becoming generous. If the tumbles connect at the right time, the bonus can shift from dull to nasty pretty quickly.

Ante Bet

Great Rhino Megaways Ante Bet Turned On

Ante Bet bumps the total stake by 25% and is meant to double your chances of hitting free spins. That's the pitch anyway. If you're trying to force more bonus triggers, it makes sense, sort of, especially in a slot where the base game isn't the main event. If you're just stretching a balance on lower stakes, it can feel a bit too aggresive because every spin costs more straight away. A lot of players will turn it on without much thought. I usually wait a bit first.

Play Great Rhino Megaways for Real Money

If you're playing for cash, start with a properly licensed UK-facing casino that actually carries Pragmatic Play slots. Pick a stake from £0.20 up to £100, then decide if Ante Bet is worth the extra spend. I'd also check the info panel for RTP because some operators run different versions, and yes, it matters. Set deposit limits before you start. This bonus can take its time, so don't play like free spins owe you anything.

Great Rhino Megaways on the Phone

Great Rhino Megaways runs perfectly well on mobile, whether you're using a browser or a casino app on iPhone or Android. I played it on a phone more than once and it doesn't really fight you, which sounds like faint praise but isn't. The spin button stays large enough, bet controls are easy to reach, and autoplay settings don't feel buried or cramped. That's half the battle with some slots.

Great Rhino Megaways on The Phone

The reels take up most of the screen, which is the right call because the tumbles are the main visual action. Symbols still look clear enough, and the top reel wilds don't get lost on a smaller display. You won't get some magical upgraded experience on mobile, but you won't lose much either. If anything, it suits quick sessions when you're messing about for ten minutes. Then again, high volatility on a phone can be a bit sneaky. You spin faster, pay less attention, and suddenly the balance has vanished quicker than expected. So yes, it works well on mobile. Maybe too well if you're not watching your bankroll properly.

Some Words About Pragmatic Play

Great Rhino Megaways on Pragmatic Play Site

Pragmatic Play made Great Rhino Megaways using the licensed Megaways system from Big Time Gaming, and it ended up being their first go with that format. The studio's known for high-volatility slots, lots of mobile-friendly releases, and a habit of keeping things punchy rather than subtle. This one feels cautious by their standards. Still, the provider has a decent reputation with players. Just remember the RTP can shift between casinos, which isn't a great look even if it's common now. Also, PragmaticPlay Limited is licensed and regulated in Great Britain by the Gambling Commission under account number 56015

A Few Tips on The Game

Try the demo first. I know that gets said a lot, but here it matters because the base game can feel flatter than the bonus screen makes it look. Keep your stake sensible too, because this slot can go quiet for longer than you'd like. When free spins finally land, pick the option that suits how much risk you can actually stomach, not just the flashy 10x start. Ante Bet can help if you're chasing the feature, but it quietly increases the cost of every spin, so it isn't a free shortcut.

My Test Session at William Hill

For that title I used William Hill for testing with real money. I always do it before writing about the game. William Hill is licensed by the Gambling Commission under account number 39225. I deposited with PayPal and started at £0.60 for the first 90 spins, staking £54 and getting back £38.40. Then I pushed up to £1 for 70 spins with Ante Bet off, so £70 staked, £61 returned. Last stretch I dropped to £0.40 for 60 spins, another £24 staked, and finally hit free spins for £82.60. Total stake came to £148, total return £182. Not a huge blowout, but the bonus saved a pretty dull session.

Similar Slots I would Recommend To Try

If you want something close to this title, Raging Rhino Megaways is the obvious one with the same animal-heavy vibe and bonus chasing feel. Christmas Carol Megaways is basically a festive reskin of Great Rhino Megaways, so that's easy. Safari Gold Megaways goes down a similar safari route but with a bit more flash. Dog House Megaways isn't a theme match, though it does scratch that Pragmatic retrigger-and-feature hunt itch.

Final Words

Great Rhino Megaways is alright. Better than dull, not exactly memorable. The bonus with the climbing multiplier is where the good stuff lives, while the base game mostly just keeps you ticking over and sometimes not even that. If you like safari slots and don't mind a formula you've probably seen before, it'll do the job. If you want loads of features or something original, this one may feel a bit flat and occaisionally stale.
